How To Choose the Perfect All-Inclusive Resort

I am not always a fan of all-inclusive resorts.  They can be a pretty insulated experience, versus a smaller property or vacation rental. That said, I have opted for an all-inclusive resort a few times, from Mexico to the Caribbean. Sometimes you just want to lay on the beach, have someone bring you snacks and cocktails and not know where your wallet is for a week.  That is exactly the type of vacay I need right now. Memorial weekend is nearly here and I can hear the beach calling me.  If relaxation is the only priority for your next vacay, here are some tips on how to choose the perfect all-inclusive resort.

Hot Off the Press vs Old News

One obvious thing to do is read reviews.  One less obvious thing is to focus on the most recent reviews. You’re looking for current news, not historical references.  Favorable reviews with detailed accounts of what made the trip enjoyable and zero mentions of ongoing construction, closure of amenities, or recent declines in service.  Who cares if it was a great place to stay six years ago? Look at what people have to say about the last six months to make the most informed decision about what the property is like now.

Highs and Lows

Know in advance whether you’re traveling in high or low season.  There are pros and cons to each. High season often means all local excursions and activities will be open and the weather is often best- and the season has the bigger crowds and higher prices to prove it.  Low season comes with a more reasonable price tag, but may have less to offer in the form of entertainment and in some cases, less than ideal weather. For the best of both worlds, look at shoulder season deals in the Spring and Fall.

Save Your Coins

Many resorts will grant you privileges to nearby sister properties.  In this way, you gain access to additional amenities, often without any additional cost.  Expand your dining options, splurge at the spa and hit a different pool for every day of your trip.  If you have champagne taste, this can be a good travel hack to stay within your budget but still experience a little luxury.

Get Outta My Pool, Kid

Kids are great, but they don’t share pools well.  They dominate.  Splashing with abandon, launching into the pool with enthusiastic cannonballs, screaming with delight.  Meanwhile the adults are cowering in pool corners, or avoiding the water completely.   I used to be that kid, so my karma now dictates that those kids are in my path anytime there’s a pool in the vicinity.  Looking for respite in the jacuzzi? Good luck, it’s full of 4 yr olds with goggles and water wings.  No bueno on my vacay.  I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: adult-only resorts are magical places.

If you’re planning a honeymoon, couples trip, girls getaway, or have been randomly splashed in the face by somebody else’s kid in the pool, filter your resort search for the adults-only options.  Parents, you can find this magic too- even on a family vacay.  God knows you need the break.  Look for resorts with two things: 1) a robust kids club, and 2) at least one adult-only pool.  Drop the kids off for some fun, then find your zen (and a cocktail) in a quiet, kid-free paradise.

From Fries to Filet Mignon

Take some time to peruse the dining options available at your top three resort choices.  Reviews from other travelers should let you know if the quality and variety of the food and drink are worth the all-inclusive rate.  Look for a range of casual and upscale dining options and top shelf alcohol.  If you’re going to have most of your meals on the property, you don’t want to get stuck with cheap liquor and cafeteria fries by the pool.

Wing It

Vacation is one of the few opportunities we have in life to be truly spontaneous.  Your time is yours.  You can blame spotty cell service or intentionally go off the grid.  Wake up and let your mood decide what you do- if anything. While you may choose not to leave the resort, look for resorts with day trip excursions and activities- in case you feel adventurous and can roll yourself off a lounger for a day to explore.  Once you check in and get settled, stop by the concierge to see what types of activities are available during your stay.   My day trip to Tulum (from Cancun) was a spur of the moment decision that was totally worth it.  Seeing gorgeous ruins set directly above the turquoise waters below is something I’ll always remember.
