Winter in DC may not be on your bucket list, it wasn’t on mine. I usually like to search for perfect bites in warm weather- it’s the Cali girl in me. That said, when a work conference took me to DC in January, I invited the girls to join me and we managed to get a decent food crawl in between conference sessions. Multitasking at its finest! And we lucked out, DC weather was relatively kind with highs in the 50s instead of the 20s. Arlington, VA
Palette 22
If I lived closer, Palette 22 would be my go-to spot. Mural splashed walls, dimly lit spaces, artists creating work as folks enjoy cocktails at the bar. Vibrant colors throughout, open kitchen and a bottomless dining option that allows you to explore the tasty globally inspired menu. We went for dinner but brunch seems like a great option here too. Bring your appetite and a few friends and sample all the perfect bites your little heart desires.
Alexandria, VA
Mason Social
We lucked out during our visit to the DC area and caught Restaurant Week in Alexandria, VA. Mason Social was the perfect pick for dinner- great appetizers, entrees and dessert. One of those rare places where everyone was happy with their food, across the board. Flavorful perfect bites in a stylish and modern setting, perfect for date night or happy hour with the girls.
Washington, DC
Cuba Libre
Remember when I said I was traveling for a conference? Well, unfortunately for me, I missed out on lunch at Cuba Libre. During an afternoon exploring the area, KT did some Brown Lady Travels work, sending me a picture of lunch that made me jealous. Don’t miss out like I did! Grab some tostones and a rum drink. Mojito Mondays is calling you (and me).
Ben’s Next Door
Allow me to introduce you to the most perfect cornbread I have ever had. I don’t know what Ben’s Next Door is doing in that kitchen but I’d like them to ship me a few more cornbread muffins with extra honey butter. Yummm. My fried catfish was also a delightfully perfect bite. While everyone else is eating at the legendary Ben’s Chili Bowl, slide next door. You won’t be disappointed. If you have a sweet tooth, save room for the deliciously rich chocolate lava cake.
Stan’s
I mentioned Stan’s in a previous post, but since this is all about perfect bites in DC, it’s worth repeating. Stan’s is a must for happy hour. Beware the drinks are not for lightweights. Even my friends from New Orleans leave Stan’s with a slight stumble. Share a few platters of chicken wings and enjoy people watching at what I affectionately call the ‘Black Cheers’.
DC was good to us on this food crawl. We definitely made the most of our time (and calories!) on this short visit, but I know we barely scratched the surface.
