Like many people, I try to reintroduce vegetables and water back into my life in January- after living mostly on cookies and wine for much of December. Since I’ve sworn off most yummy delicious things until Mardi Gras week, I figure now is a good time to reminisce on better days- like my Atlanta food crawl last summer.
Visiting my friend, Jovy, who is originally from Louisiana and plays zero games when it comes to food, I didn’t even bother to research restaurants before KT and I landed in ATL. In college, Jovy was legendary for making magic happen with whatever I had in my kitchen- which wasn’t much. He could make a full meal with a can of corn, some spices and whatever odds and ends he found in the pantry. If I’d trust anybody to curate my food crawl in Atlanta, it’s Jovy. I knew we would be in good hands and we were!
Breakfast at Highland Bakery
Before we even made it to the restaurant, Jovy let us know that Highland Bakery had some special brown sugar butter that we needed to know about. Mmmhmm, Highland Bakery had me at hello. I was so distracted I didn’t even get a picture of the food. You’ll just have to head to the Old 4th Ward and try it yourself! There’s also a Bake Shop at the restaurant. Do yourself a favor and grab some dessert on your way out. The mini cupcakes were the truth.
Lunch at Six Feet Under Pub and Fish House
If you visit Six Feet Under, be sure to get some Toes to share with the table- Mouse, Rat or Dragon Toes. Before you freak out, the “toes” are peppers (sweet, jalapeno or habanero) stuffed with shrimp and wrapped in bacon. Anything that involves both shrimp and bacon is alright with me. And this catfish took me to a happy place.
Dinner at Agave Restaurant and Tequila Bar
We had a late dinner at Agave; the restaurant has a warm and casually sophisticated feel. And I love a good margarita, so I was particularly excited that it was also a tequila bar. My spicy margarita with jalapenos paired with the cayenne fried chicken with mashed potatoes and grilled corn, was perfect.
Brunch at The Lawrence
If the Sunday we were there is any indication, Brunch at The Lawrence is an event. Couples on dates, ladies toasting with mimosas and groups of friends like us, enjoying the afternoon together. A good place to people watch for sure.
The menu didn’t disappoint either. I was torn between the french toast with vanilla riesling syrup and the fried chicken and red velvet waffles. The waffles won… this time. I blame the whipped cream cheese drizzle. I’ma be back for that vanilla riesling syrup though.
Pass Me a Plate
Is anybody else hungry? Believe it or not, we did manage to do a couple other things on this warm weekend in Atlanta last summer, but clearly food was the star! Anyone have ideas for my next Atlanta food crawl?
Another successful food crawl. Part two soon?!
absolutely! 😉
