Cute Dates, One Day In San Francisco, Travel Tips, Weekends in Cali

Essential Tips for Your Visit to Golden Gate Park

A visit to Golden Gate Park is a must, for tourists and locals alike. Covering more than 1,000 acres- Golden Gate Park is actually bigger than Central Park in New York City. There are countless things to do, from visiting museums and gardens to special events like the Hot Chocolate Run and the Bay to Breakers. If you have a day to explore San Francisco, here are some highlights to check out on your visit to Golden Gate Park.

Stop and Smell the Flowers

The Conservatory of Flowers is a sight, even from outside. Make this your first stop as you head into the park or catch a special event, like Botanicals and Brews if you are looking to spend a Friday evening in the park. Live local music, food trucks, beer and wine- super cute date idea or alternative for happy hour with friends.

Go Green

The San Francisco Botanical Garden is part Secret Garden, part Jurassic Park. I think this may be my new favorite place for a walk. With plants and trees from all over the world, you can get lost and find some peace in the middle of the city.

Tea Time

The Japanese Tea Garden, just steps from the deYoung Museum and California Academy of Sciences, is a beautiful space. Take some time during your visit to Golden Gate Park to experience the oldest Japanese garden in the US.

Be Artsy… and Geek Out

The deYoung Museum and California Academy of Sciences are two gems in the park that you don’t want to miss. Whether you are an artist, a science buff, or just like exploring new ideas and being inspired- this area of the park is for you! The Nightlife series at Cal Academy is high on my list of things to do this year. Every Thursday night, cocktails compliment creature exhibits- add music and you have a vibe.

The deYoung Museum has culturally relevant exhibits year round; my last trip was to see the exhibit highlighting art from the African American South. Later this year, there will be an exhibit about art in the age of Black Power. Dope. I can’t wait!

Snacks and Sunshine

Have lunch in Hellman Hollow or Lindley Meadow, enjoy the sunshine (hopefully) and play a little soccer or frisbee- or nap if that’s your sport. Both wide open fields are just the right backdrop for a nice lunch and leisurely afternoon. And really, if you’re from a city, how often do you get to hang out in a meadow?

Take a Trip Back in Time

For one last great photo opp at the edge of the park, make a quick stop at the old Dutch Windmill. Built in 1902, this historic landmark is an impressive sight at more than 70 feet and surrounded by the Queen Wilhelmina Tulip Garden.

Beach View, Brews and Burgers

After a full day of exploring the park, treat yourself to happy hour (on weekdays) or dinner at Beach Chalet Brewery and Restaurant. If you time it right (and the weather is on your side), you can catch a beautiful sunset at Ocean Beach.

Brown Lady Travel Tips

If you plan to visit Golden Gate Park by car, weekdays are your best bet. You can drive through the park freely and may miss some of the weekend crowds at certain attractions. However, Sundays (and half day Saturdays in the spring and summer) there are road closures for cars– making the park more accessible and welcoming for bikers, runners and tourists exploring. If you’re visiting on a sunny weekend, grab a bike and head for Sunday Funday at the park!

San Francisco residents, bring an I.D with your current address (or pull up a bill on your phone as proof of residency). You can take advantage of discount tickets and in some cases free admission (daily at the Botanical Gardens, free Saturdays at the deYoung museum, two free weekends a year at Cal Academy). Visitors, you can take advantage of free days at Golden Gate Park too; many museums and attractions have at least one free day a month, for the general public.

Now that you’ve gotten a tour, what are you waiting for? Nature is calling…
